If you look at the ingredients of the many weight loss supplements available in the market they will almost always contains green tea extract. Some of the other ingredients that you find in these weight loss supplements may be unproven and/or dangerous to health but green tea extract has been shown to be safe and scientifically proven to aid in weight loss.
Fat Burning Properties of Green Tea
The fat on our bodies, regardless of whether that fat is on the belly, butt, thighs, back of the arms or elsewhere, is a specific type of fat called triglycerides. When we eat food and that specific meal contains more calories than the body can use for energy at that given time, the liver turns those excess calories into triglycerides and sends them into the blood stream. At this point the body may still use some of these triglycerides in the blood for energy if needed but the rest will be stored as fat. The amazing thing with green tea extract is that it contains antioxidants called catechins that activate an enzyme that dissolves triglycerides in the blood stream and consequently helps us to “burn fat”.
Green Tea Increases the Metabolism
The catechins found in green tea are actually a group of four different closely related antioxidants and one of the them in particular called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) has been found by a variety of studies, in both the east and the west, to significantly increase our metabolism. The EGCG, as well as caffeine content, of green tea induces a stimulatory effect upon the central nervous system that increases the amount of energy that the body needs to perform its normal functions like pumping blood around the body and breathing. This ‘extra energy need’ will then trigger the body to release stored fat into the blood stream to satisfy those energy needs. This is the basic but simple and effective way in which green tea weight loss works.
To use green tea to lose weight it is a lot more effective to use green tea extract than to drink green tea. Green tea extract is a concentrated form of green tea that is very high in EGCG. To get the equivalent weight loss effects of one average green tea extract tablet/capsule we would need to drink about 12 cups of green tea!
