Guide to Yoga

by Rob

Many gyms and fitness centers are adding yoga to their facility because of the popularity it has gained in recent years.  Although an ancient practice of intense concentration, it is still misunderstood by many people.  It has also experience much adaptation today as a form or exercise.

Originally a Hindu philosophy, yoga involved controlled breathing and intense postures to achieve a level of consciousness that was intense and deep.  Today there are many versions that have been adapted to meet relaxation and exercise needs of people on the go.

The basic movements of yoga are smooth and can be adapted to the needs and fitness level of the individual.  For example, a person that has done yoga for many years can push themselves to more intense levels of posture moves and concentration levels than a person engaging in it for the first time.  However, the measure of success is also an individual thing so it is never about competition.  The purpose is to achieve balance in mind, body and spirit.

Yoga is suited for children, adults and even elderly people.  A good instructor will teach a person to master their breathing first to better enable them to engage in postures that challenge the body.  As the body bends, stretches and challenges itself the breathing techniques are employed to enable the body to not be uncomfortable as the yoga practice takes place.  As the concentration level is deepened, many people describe yoga as a spiritual experience.

A deep level of relaxation can be achieved with yoga and after a session, most people feel extremely stress free.  A person’s body has moved, flexed and exercised in a very smooth manner while the breath has deepened the relaxation experience.  Combining the two allows people to master the ability to calm themselves and be less stressed during the day.
