Compression Hosiery For Medical Conditions

by Rob

If you are not familiar with compression hosiery, then you are in for some remarkable news. This is hosiery with medical applications, actually sometimes prescribed by physicians. This type of hosiery not only can enhance the appearance of your legs but protect you from serious medical conditions. You do not have to get a prescription to buy compression hosiery or the toeless compression stockings that are also sold without prescription.

The compression hosiery is often prescribed for circulatory disorders that cause legs to swell and can become very painful. Compression garments are very useful for lymphedema which is swelling due to accumulations of fluids, chronic venous insufficiency, caused by poor circulation between the legs and the heart, for recovery after sclerotherapy, which is a treatment of varicose or spider veins and for helping with varicose veins themselves. Many of these conditions can lead to serious complications if not treated. The compression hosiery aids the circulation and protects the legs which, with circulation issues, are more susceptible to injury and infection. Their main benefit is the support and relief from pain they provide.

Compression hosiery comes in different materials that supply different levels of support. For those who have unusual sizes there are custom-sized ones. Ones with lower-rated compression strength are available over the counter at most pharmacies. There are even toeless compression stockings for those who want to wear some support but also want to wear more comfortable, open-toed shoes or sandals. However, for serious conditions requiring therapeutic-strength compressions power, a physician must authorize purchase with a prescription. Do not borrow someone else’s prescription-strength hosiery based on your own diagnosis. Only a physician can judge if you can safely use the more powerful compression–anything that could interfere with circulation in your legs is very serious and should not be toyed with.

Compression hosiery’s therapeutic value comes from the ability of the constant pressure from the material to compress and reduce surface veins of the legs. Blood is given a boost and able to move out of the veins and back into circulation. The shove speeds up blood and fluids’ circulation through the leg’s veins, reducing swelling and at the same time reducing the pain and discomfort that accompanies swelling and pooling of blood and enlargement of veins. Properly designed compression hosiery will apply lots of pressure at the ankles and continues up the leg in order to force blood and fluids upwards, against gravity. Although women are more likely to suffer from these medical problems, men are also victims and can also benefit from compression hosiery, especially if they have circulation issues and are going to be seated for an extended length of time, for example, while traveling. There is hosiery available as dress socks for men, likewise available in different degrees of compression strength.

Last year I worked as a sales person and I had to stand all day. I found that wearing the compression hosiery really helps to relieve the swelling and pain in the legs (when I wasn’t wearing the compression hosiery, my legs were heavy, swollen… at the end of the day..)
