Keep Exercsie Fun and Social to Keep from Giving Up

by Rob

If you’ve failed at managing your weight through exercise, it may simply be that you’re bored. Repetitive exercises, the same old gym scene and the same routine can lead to giving up. After all, it’s hard enough to stay motivated when the thing you’re trying to stay focused on is difficult and painful.

Rather than engaging in the same old exercises at the gym, try engaging in sports or activities that give you the same benefits without all that repetitive boredom. Some of my greatest gains in terms of weight loss, tone and muscle development began when I started rock climbing. Though not a sport for everybody, I took to it with a passion.

I wasn’t in it for the health benefits but because I loved the thrill and the challenge. In addition, my climbing partners and I reveled in the time together outdoors. We stay in shape during the winter months by climbing at our indoor climbing gym and, at 40, I’ve never been more fit. The weight loss and health benefits are an entirely unintended consequence of engaging in an activity I enjoy and I never find myself bored.

Think of creative ways to stay active that you’ll find enjoyable and beneficial. For example, you might pack a basket or bag with light picnic supplies and go for a hike with your family. A picnic backpack will help keep your hands free as you hike. It’s a wonderful way to get out in nature, get some exercise and enjoy the company of your family.

You might also want to check your local paper and store bulletin boards for group activities such as nature hikes, softball teams, cycling and bird watching groups. The social element will encourage you to keep at it as you make friends and enjoy the fresh air. While not every outdoor group activity will turn you into a lean, mean fighting machine, you’re sure to be better off than you would be sitting on your couch at home.

So make the most of your exercise opportunities by keeping them challenging, enjoyable and social. You’ll find motivation through friendship and fun to keep at it and keep the calories burning.
