2. Common Misconception: Pain means you're doing it right. Pain is your body’s way of letting you know something is wrong. Do not ignore this. When you go beyond exercise and testing yourself, you will encounter physical discomfort and need to overcome it. Take marathon training for example. You need to build a “base” of athletic ability before moving on to more advanced training. Base training conditions the body, preparing it for more extensive training. Learn to understand what your body is telling you. Are you out of breath from exercising hard or could you be having a heart attack. Exercise is necessary for health. Even though it's normal to have some soreness after exercising, it is important to take it slow and let your muscles recuperate between workouts. There are two common problems here with beginning exercisers. If you insist on working out when you are in pain, you are taking the chance of long-lasting injury to muscles, tendons and ligaments if they are not allowed sufficient time to rest and heal. If you do this, you may find yourself battling chronic pain and unable to exercise.
You're not going to be very motivated to exercise if you wake up hurting all over the next day. Constant pain can mean certain death for your exercise program.
3. Common Mistake: Sacrificing Quality for Quantity. When you feel ready to add more reps in a particular exercise to build up the corresponding muscles, instead of making yourself do more each time, do fewer reps in each set, but increase the number of sets. Also, back off to half your usual number of reps but add a couple of more sets. You will still gain strength in your fast-twitch muscles, but you will not feel as tired.
4. Common Myth: Weight training causes women to bulk up. Weight training for a woman will strengthen and tone muscle, burn fat and increase metabolism, not build mass. Women's bodies do not make a sufficient amount of testosterone to develop to build the big muscles that men do.
5. Common Mistake: Too much focus on strengths. You should concentrate more on your areas of weakness rather than the stuff you're good at. This will help you balance things. For instance, if your lower body is stronger than your upper body, dedicate more exercise time to the upper body.
