The Basics of Whey Protein Supplements

by Rob

Choosing a best whey protein supplement can be truly confusing. There are so many bodybuilding supplements online, you need to be able to tell the difference between whey protein “concentrates” and “isolates”. Although the terms seem similar, the difference is actually very large. Products labeled as “concentrates” may actually contain very little protein, with the actual amount being highly unpredictable based on brand and product type (anywhere from 30% to 90%). Such products are therefore not necessarily “concentrated” at all. Instead you need to search for products called protein “isolates”. These versions generally will have a minimum protein content of 90% and as a result very little of the sugar and fat which you don’t want for the goal of building muscle mass.

So what exactly are whey protein supplements made of? They are usually dry powders made from cows milk, and of course are very high in protein. The majority of nutritionists agree that the highest quality form of protein available is whey protein. This is true despite the fact that the protein in milk is actually only 20% whey. The remaining 80% of milk’s protein is known as Casein, and this form is known as being not nearly as absorbable as whey. Although protein is found in many normal food sources, especially dairy products and red meat, athletes, bodybuilders, or anyone interested in increasing their body mass may not be able to obtain enough protein from day-to-day food. Protein is such a key nutrient for human life, as it contains numerous essential amino acids. The various roles that protein plays in the body are very diverse and range from the repair of body cells, giving a stable energy source, and of course, the building of muscle mass.

What is interesting is that whey protein supplements can also be useful for weight loss goals as well as muscle mass building. Protein consumption forces the body to focus lean muscle mass as opposed to fat. Studies show that individuals who consume high amounts of protein (including whey) and who regularly exercise have increased lean muscle tissue and less body fat. Finally, whey protein powder simply helps to create a feeling of fullness which can thus help to reduce hunger and therefore help with weight loss directly as well.
