The Eastern Form of Shiatsu Massage

Where is the Shiatsu Massage From?

There are many types of ancient eastern massage techniques that are still quite popular and used in many different countries. The shiatsu massage is a Japanese massage that incorporates the eastern theme of balancing the energies and physical aspects of the body. It derived from Tokujiro Namikoshi who combined parts of traditional Chinese therapies with western anatomical knowledge and applied them to the original Japanese form of therapy called Teate. He created the Japanese Shiatsu College in 1940 and other forms of shiatsu massage have derived since then.

What is a Shiatsu Massage?

A shiatsu massage is the use of only the hands to bring relief and harmony to the one receiving the therapy. It focuses on using specific points in the fingers, thumbs, and palms of the hands to bring harmony to the body. It is a long process where the one giving the massage practices “Diagnosis and Therapy Combined” to detect problems occurring in the muscles and then figures out a way to fix the problem by using only the hands. The therapist will also try to sense the energy around the subject to detect any issues more internally, for instance, in the organs. They will then combine ancient Chinese techniques with the hands-on, Western approach to physically resolve the problem.

The massage therapy techniques used by a therapist will also attempt to prevent any further damage by focusing energy towards the immune system. The diagnostic process is critical to the entire shiatsu experience because if the source of the problem is incorrectly diagnosed, then treatment will most likely be pointless or even harmful. It is direly important to the shiatsu technique to diagnose the problems properly and prior to the resolution phase.

Is a Shiatsu Massage Chair Equivalent to an Authentic Shiatsu Massage?

A massage chair is definitely not anywhere close to equal to an actual shiatsu massage experience. A mechanical chair that has different vibration and kneading techniques may be relaxing and comfortable, but it is definitely not anything like experiencing a shiatsu massage from a certified therapist trained in shiatsu techniques. In fact, according to wikipedia a therapist who wants to practice shiatsu must be “licensed with the Ministry of Health and Welfare,” and study for three years in specific shiatsu “universities or colleges in Japan.”
