Melatonin Cream

by Rob

The hormonal supplement melatonin is available as a topical cream as well as tablets and sublingual tablets.  The cream form of melatonin is marketed in many different ways; it is marketed as a natural sleep aid for the treatment of temporary insomnia and jet lag.  Melatonin cream may also be marketed as an anti-oxidant to protect skin from free radical damage, to reduce the depth of wrinkles and to slow the effects of aging on the skin. The side effects of Melatonin are the same whether it is used in pill or cream form and include vivid dreams or nightmares, headaches, rapid heartbeat, nausea and irritability, among others.

Melatonin in pill form is a well-established treatment for temporary insomnia and is known for its ability to regulate the body’s sleep cycle and promote healthy sleep patterns.  While not as many people use melatonin cream, it is just as effective as the pill form in promoting healthy sleep patterns, and has been proven very effective in helping people fall asleep quickly.  The cream form of melatonin regulates the body’s biorhythm and adjusts the internal clock to let the body and mind know it is time to rest.

Why would someone use melatonin cream when it would be much easier to take a pill?  The added benefit of using melatonin cream is that is has been shown to be very effective in reducing wrinkles and the effects of aging on the skin.  Studies conducted in Germany have shown that the use of topical melatonin reduces the depth and span of wrinkles after only one month of use.  During this time skin appeared and felt much smoother and promoted a “youthful glow” that was not present when the study began.  Another clinical trial period of six weeks found that melatonin promoted the healing of damaged tissue and appeared to prevent skin damage caused by radiation treatment.

Not only does melatonin cream offer the same sleep-aid benefits of melatonin in tablets it offers the added benefit of smoothing and improving skin.  However, before beginning any hormonal supplements it is wise to check with your healthcare provider and be aware of any possible side effects and drug interactions.
