For those of us with acne, especially if we have skin that is sensitive and dry, we need to take special care with the acne remedies we use. People with dry skin do suffer from acne and many acne remedies dry the skin further as they are designed to stop the over production of oil. This can leave sensitive skin too dry and flaky. Remedies that do not dry out the skin are needed to prevent this. Many benzoyl peroxide or retinol products are suitable for those with dry skin as long as they have low concentrations of these ingredients.
How to deal with acne if you have dry skin
A skin care routine that is gentle and moisturising will help the sensitivity and dryness that this type of skin is prone to. Most of the cleansers formulated for those with acne are too drying and will irritate sensitive skin. Instead you should choose a mild cleanser that will cleanse the skin properly but won’t be too drying or cause further irritation.Only wash your face twice a day with a very mild soap and either a soft, clean washcloth or clean hands.
You will need a light, non oily moisturiser that won’t make your acne worse by increasing the oil on the skin. keep away from thick creams or lotions which can cause irritation by clogging the pores.
Retinol Acne Remedies
An acne treatment with retinol or benzoyl peroxide can be used if your skin is sensitive or dry but you will need to choose one with the lowest concentration possible. Use on spots only not all over the face and only use once a day until you know if you are going to react to it. If this level does not cause any irritation and you feel you need a more concentrated product try one with a slightly higher concentration. Take it slowly and stop using the product if you react badly.
