Scitec Nutrition 100% Whey Isolate is pure protein isolate. As many of you know, isolates are the most quickly digested type of protein (second only to hydrolyzed protein). They are stripped from almost all micro and macronutrients except protein. So compared to typical protein concentrate, whey isolate give you less fats and carbs and more protein per serving.
For those of you hearing the brand for the first time, Scitec Nutrition is one of the biggest brands in Europe. For the past 20 years it managed to expand to 42 countries and currently has more than 175 unique products in its range. If you take into account the different flavours, sizes and strenght of the products, then you get over 700 variations. So yeah, it’s definitely not one of those I-made-it-in-my-garage types of companies.
Scitec Whey Isolate Nutrition Informaiton
A quick glance at the back of the tub reveals some very good numbers.
In each serving of 25g you get less than 0.5g of fat, only 0.6g of carbs and whooping 21g of protein. So that’s just 87 calories per serving. Great stuff.
Scitec have also decided to add 250mg of L-Glutamine to each serving, which aids recovery. While it’s better to have some than none at all, I think this can lead to some confusion. The effective dosage of L-Glutamine is 5g and unless you are having about 20 shakes a day, then you won’t see much benefit out of it. Even if you consume the reasonable amount of 2-3 shakes a day, that’s still merely 750mg.
L-Glutamine aside, I’m impressed with the Nutrition Information. That’s exactly what Whey Isolate should look like – low in fat and carbs and high in protein. As a matter of fact each tub contains about 84% protein content. That’s above the industry’s standard, being around 80%.
Scitec Whey Isolate Ingredients
In order of predominance the first ingredient is whey protein isolate. It is microfiltered and ultrafiltered for purity. This is then followed by the emulsifier (soy lecithin, which is used for better mixability and to prevent forming clumps), a bunch of protein microfractions, the flavouring system and finally hydrolyzed whey.
The flavouring varies depending on the tub you go for. It’s worth mentioning though that Scitec have used artificial sweeteners – Sucralose and Acesulfame K. So bear that in mind if you want a product with natural sweeteners, such as stevia.
Another thing I need to bring to your attention is Scitec’s claim that 100% Whey Isolate is “fortified with even faster absorbing whey hydrolysate”. Technically that’s correct. However, the hydrolized protein is at the very end of the ingredients list. This means that you are getting more artificial sweeteners than whey hydrolysate. In other words, you are getting close to nothing.
Scitec Whey Isolate Taste and Mixability
Most people judge the quality of a protein powder by how good it tastes and it mixes. While this isn’t the most trustworthy way in determining quality, it still gives a good indication. The protein powder should mix easily and definitely shouldn’t taste bad.
Scitec 100% Whey Isolate meets those criteria. Mixing is almost instant without any clumps and if you stick to the recommended amount of 300ml of water, you will get a light and easy to drink shake. So if you are not a big fan of thick shakes, especially after your workout, then you should enjoy 100% Whey Isolate.
As for taste, it’s a bit tricky. Strawberry and Raspberry are a bit too sweet for my liking (and I love sweet stuff). They also tend to taste somewhat artificial. If you love fruit flavoured protein powders then you might enjoy these, but I can’t give my vote for them.
Having said that, Vanilla and Chocolate taste amazing. I’ve gone through many Chocolate flavoured tubs of protein and 100% Whey Isolate is solid, especially for an isolate. It’s not too watery and doesn’t come too sweet either. Vanilla is also pretty good (and this comes from a non-vanilla fan!).
As for Banana, I am yet to try this flavour. If any of you guys have tried it, please let me know how it tastes in the comment section below.
The Bottom Line – Scitec Whey Isolate
Scitec Nutrition did not aim to reinvent the wheel with this product, rather release a simple and effective product for those of you who want whey isolate. The label on the tub says exactly what’s inside – 100% Whey Isolate, nothing more nothing less. And for that, I think it is a great choice for those of you who are looking for a quick-digesting protein powder that will give you plenty of protein in each scoop with almost no carbs and fats.
